Need advise...560 to 650 in a month

by kirankhatri27 » Wed Jun 23, 2010 8:11 am
Hi All,

I took my GMAT on 17th June 2009, and scored 560 (Q46, V21). I couldn't finish my exam, i was left with 2 verbal questions unanswered at the end. I was very disappointment with my score. Now, I am planning to retake it on 31 July. So, i have only 5 weeks to prepare. Well my main problem is verbal, and especially SC. I am ok in CR, but RC also gives me a hard time. I am not native english speaker, and my english is not very good.

Here is the list of material i used :

Prepared for the exam for over 3 months:
Knewton Diagnostic Exam :450
Knewton online classes and whole homework material
OG 12 (full)
Kaplan Guide
VIP tests
OG REview VErbal Edition 2nd
OG review Quant Edition 2nd
Beatthegmat Flash cards

Knewton Practice Test:

Practice GMAT #1 03/22/2010 at 06:51PM Q35 V19 450
Practice GMAT #2 05/10/2010 at 03:36PM Q32 V29 510
Practice GMAT #3 05/11/2010 at 05:02PM Q32 V26 490
Practice GMAT #4 05/13/2010 at 06:01PM Q37 V27 530
Practice GMAT #5 06/07/2010 at 04:51PM Q44 V25 570

Kaplan PRactice Test (1): 520 28/04/10
Kaplan Diagnostic test : 610

MGMAT 1 : 590 Q 37 V 32 (could not complete the Quat section)

GMAT Prep 8 days before the exam : 530 Q34, V 27
GMat Prep 2: 4 days before the exam: 530 Q40, V 23
GMat Prep 3: 2 days before the exam : 530 Q 44, V20

WEll i was very disappointment when i saw my GMAt prep exam score, and was just hoping to get 600+ on the actual GMAT. But, clearly didnt. I feel My verbal score kept going down with each exam. I reviewed all the questions,i got wrong. I feel SC made my score go down, as i get very confused with them.

Please advise me on, which material to use and the what should i do to make my SC improve. is it possible for me to improve 100 points in one month. I am aiming for 650+ and i have only one month with me.

Thanks,

Kiran Khatri

Wow, it's a mazing, isn't it? 24 views and no replies! There are couple of other posts by "newbies" that could really need the help, including myself, and similarly everyone looks without replying. Well, I'm probably not going to be of much help, but I found an article I think might apply to you. Here's the link https://www.beatthegmat.com/can-you-help ... 59394.html. I'm in a similar position as you, in that I need to improve my score drastically in a very short period of time, except my starting point is somewhat lower than yours. Hope this helps. Good luck and keep (those of) us (who care) posted.

Hi,

well, I am taking the retest on 10th July 2010. I think the best thing you can have is self-belief that you can do this. I am having similar problems like you guys. I am okay with SC, working on CR and plan to have RC done by the end of the week. I am doing loads of practice on a clock. So far, I have been averaging 55 secs on SC and 98 secs on CR with about 75% accuracy. I have been analyzing myself, checking why I am picking wrong answers, and seeing what I can do to get that accuracy to about 85 - 90%.

On the Quant side, I had issues with Data Sufficiency questions. Took me some time to figure out the process of elimination for DS. I am scoring 90 - 95% on quant with about 90 secs/question. DS is still my problem-child with 90% accuracy.

I have been using Official Guide alone.

In sum,
1) Have confidence that you can do this
2) Time yourself
3) Critique your work
4) Test yourself on the Official Guide
5) Devise ways to master the process of elimination

I scored 660, aiming to have 750+
