Idiom

Aid in (doing something)
(give) aid to (someone or somthing)

This is frequently the case with idioms that one preposition is appropriate when referring to a gerund and and another for a noun.

Example:
Sally aided Susie in planning her wedding.
G8 leaders gave aid to developing nations.

i would read the text below as this: -

who were either asking (the goddess Bona Dea's aid) aid of the goddess Bona Dea's in healing physical and mental ills or thanking her for such help.

here to maintain parallelism
asking X + phrase1 or thanking X +phrase2

phrase1=in healing physical and mental ills
phrase2=for such help

is "to heal physical and mental ills" a phrase?
if not then A fit in the slot.

as far as I remember aid + nothing i.e analogous to consider x is an idiom.........

for example: The aid given is very less.

please correct me if I am wrong.........
