Same question, what is wrong with E?
However E says that he came to refuge as this town was close to those he trusted (being famous is not the reason for him to take refuge but just an information).
I think E gives a more clear information.
Can someone clarify this?
I felt A is wrong as and above suggests that he came to take refuge as this town was both famous and close to people he trusteda town famous because of "The Godfather" and near to those he most trusted.

I would go with A.
In E take refuge in because ....sounds absurd. Also, E is much wordy.

IMO E.
a town famous because of "The Godfather" and near to those he most trusted.
The last sentence is a modifier that tells us about the TOWN that it was famous for the GODFATHER and that the town was near to those he most trusted. Being famous had no relation with the other feature, and AND gives that meaning
