switch from Medical career to MBA

by desidoc9 » Sat Jun 28, 2008 10:09 am
Hi Stacy

My name is Dr. Vicky Kothari and I am from India. 28 years of age.

I have finished my MBBS ( which is equivalent to med school in US ).

I have 1 yr internship experience.
2 years of post grad work exp.

I am looking to make a career switch by doing a MBA.
I may want to follow into the Hospital Administration / Healthcare Management side, but I am want to look at other opportunities too.

My extracurricular activities - Assistant Editor in College Magazine. Won quite a few interschool and intercollege Quiz competitions.

Have decent community / NGO work on my resume.

I am not sure how B-Schools will calculate my GPA, so can't provide any information on that regards.

Aiming to take GMAT in 6 weeks time and aiming for a 720+ score.

Can you give me some advice as to whether I can make the cut for Top 10 B-Schools in US ?

And also, since B-schools like to have a batch with comes from different professional backgrounds, is being a Doctor any kind of advantage ?

Thanks and Regards

Dear Vicky,

I cannot really comment on how competitive you will be as I do not have all of the information, namely GMAT and GPA. Your experience will set you apart and be of interest. However, it will be critical for you to explain why you want to leave medicine, get your MBA, and what you plan to do post-MBA. If you do score as you believe you will and put together a strong application, then admission to top MBA programs is within reach.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa

Thanks for the guidance.

I was checking various sites to see how Indian system is converted into GPA...
and from what I have gathered my GPA would be around 3.67-4.0, depending on what scale the colleges use.

I have just started my prep for GMAT and I am able to hit 85-90% consistently.
With good prep and practice, i believe that a score of 720-750 is achievable.

Looking forward to your comments.

Thanks and regards

Dear Vicky,

As I stated earlier, if you score in the 700s on your GMAT, then you should be competitive for most top programs. Whether or not you receive admission will depend on how strong your overall package is. Thus your essays, resume, and interview are critical components which will require much effort.

Best of luck,
Lisa
