Hi All,

I am currently struggling with getting my essays through for Round 2. My GMAT Score is 730 (Q50 V38), working with a top ranked healthcare consulting company for past 3.5 years. I am targeting Fuqua, Darden, and Kellogg and am looking at a possible career in marketing. To be more concise I plan to get into brand management for a CPG or apparel company and I am kind of worried, if saying this in my essays will be a hard point to convince the adcoms about considering my limited experience on marketing. Any suggestions and thoughts around this will be appreciated. Also for universities like Fuqua where Healthcare constitutes a primary recruting segment, would it be of any help to keep healthcare and not CPG in my short term long term goals.

Hello Mayuri

Post MBA goals form an important part of your application. Changing careers is a good reason to pursue MBA and in your essays you have to justify what motivates you to enter the new field. While some experience in the field does help in justifying your post MBA goals better, it is not necessary to have experience in that field, in your case - marketing. But it is necessary that you thoroughly research the area, take steps to understand it, interact with people in the field, etc. In short, prove to the adcoms that you are truly committed to entering this profession.

So tell me what steps have you take to understand marketing better? What excites you about marketing?

Hello Mayuri,
What kind of work experience do you have already? It's not necessary to have marketing experience before getting your MBA to transition into CPG marketing, especially if you attend a top MBA program that has companies recruiting there to find marketing talent. I know many MBA grads who received job offers in CPG marketing with no prior marketing experience. They had backgrounds in teaching, consulting, finance, and sales, to name a few.

It is important that you understand what it is about marketing that attracts you and think about any skills you have that could be relevant. CPG marketing will require you to manage a range of responsibilities, such as managing product sales and forecasts, thinking about how you communicate to consumers, developing new products and packaging, creating annual marketing plans, and overseeing budgets (among other tasks). Think about your strengths and how you can leverage these into a marketing role to make your career goals realistic. You also want to think about your personal attributes and understand why marketing would be a good fit for you, and be able to explain this. If you haven't done this already, talk to people in marketing roles to really understand the scope and nature of their jobs so you can communicate in your essays why you're pursuing this path.

Hope this helps!

In general, a strong career plan is one that brings the candidate to a very successful future, and one that is very likely to happen. A strong career plan should mention specific industry, specific positions, connection to past and likely and natural connection of goals. The more specific and personal the essay is, the better.
The key to the Career Essay:
Connect most sentences with the future goals and the industry name.
o Most of the sentences should relate to the goals.
o For example:
Why School X? Because Professor X is the world's best in Y, and I need Y to achieve my goal Z.

Hi Mayuri,
It is true that switching industries - especially to a role like brand management in CPG or apparel - and geography is quite tough, despite going to the best B-schools. You need a strong cultural context and prior experience in the field to become attractive to a recruiter.

So stating this as a goal in our application essays is a risk as the school may have concerns about your employability.

Instead, you can focus on career progression or a function switch - more in line with your past experience & skills - in the essays, and once you have the admit, see whether a switch is realistically possible.

I hope this makes sense.

I advise clients and applicants to emphasize compatible skills gained in previous experience that extends to the career direction. Some examples, could include business development skills, leadership capabilities, etc.

I hope this helps.

Hi Mayuri,

If you feel you will not be able to put in enough matter to convince the adcom about your Marketing plans which is understandable then it would be better to go with Healthcare which is your familiar domain and wherein you will be able to present a better and a stronger application.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you would have any other specific question about GMAT preparation and we would be happy to guide.

Wish you the best.
