Automobile price

by Dean Jones » Sun Dec 18, 2011 7:05 am
Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

(A) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.
(B) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease fourtenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year.
(C) The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year's models' average price, or about $72, below this year's comparably equipped cars and trucks.
(D) Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent.
(E) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

Deano.

IMO A

D and E are out because of wrong comparison or contrast.
C suggests that decrease will be in model's avg price or in 72$.
B suggests that wither there will be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent or 72$.
Hence A
plz correct me if wrong...thnx

IMO - B;

A- not sure amounting to refer to decrease or the final price? price is compared to cars and trucks?
C - decrease and below; below the cars and trucks?
D & E - incorrect modifiers;

(A) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year. => this choice have 2 problems. First "amounting to about 72$" will modifies the average price of next year's models, but the intended meaning of the sentence is the decrease =$72. Second, the average price is compare with equipped care. Apple to Orange. So, wrong.
=> Should avoid noun when we can use verb with "decrease". Compare apple to orange.
(D) Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent. => wrong when compare models with automobile company
(E) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent. => => wrong when compare models with automobile company

A is bad because of "amounting to about $72"

B is the best
