Not convinced with A for "has been". Replacing "has been" with "was" would sound much better. Please discuss.

B/C/E - principle of - wrong
B/E - 'being' - avoid being whenever there are
Between A/D - it took a hundred years starting then till now. So present perfect tense is fine here.
IMO A.
If we understand the meaning at the beginning itself then we can eliminate all other options directly and choose A with the tense alone.

Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
