silly mistakes v/s time management

by yogami » Tue Jun 09, 2009 12:23 am
Silly mistakes are a direct result of not going through the question clearly or making faulty calculations. Both can be minimized by spending time on every question. I am planning to spend at the most 2 minutes per question, and on rare occasions up to 4 minutes for those where I know that I am close to the answer but not quite there. But such questions are those one odd 700+ questions in the beginning. I am going to strictly move on if I am spending more time. I somehow need to internalize the thumb rule for quant:
11 => 51-55 minutes of clock time remaining
22 => 31-35
33 => 5 - 10

I don't have much problem with Verbal timing but quant is an issue as of now. I wonna know how other people deal with time management, their cutoffs etc..
200 or 800. It don't matter no more.

I had the same timing strategy when i took the GMAT..

Question to be on : Clock reading

0 : 75 mins
10 : 50 mins
20 : 30 mins
30 : 12 mins
35 : 3 mins

But when i took the test, I couldn't check this everytime. So I toned it down to 3 milestones, 15th ques (~45mins), 25th ques(~25mins) and 30th ques(~14mins). I think these are sufficient to catch up or to relax!!!

How about I carry an electronic ring on one of my fingers that beeps every 2 minutes? Is that cheating?

Try to practice with your preferred timing so you intuitively know when your time is up. Then you won't be preoccupied with the clock.

it's not allowed in exam room.
