not X but [rather] Y
not only X but [also] Y

this is atleast what Ron/Stacey say....

yes the author does say "B. Clark properly emphasizes" and "fails to..." but the study is not important per se. the rest half of the passage doesnt mention the study or B. Clark at all, the passage starts and ends with the Lone wolf case- so this case is the theme of the passage...

You're right However the correct idiom is "not only...but also..." This idiom is very commonly tested on the GMAT. example She is not only beautiful, but also smart. You want to follow the idiom with two different descriptions. Hope that helps! I read the stacey and Ron's comments on this...
