I assume that option D gives a meaning that it changed suddenly instead of over a time period and hence wrong. Gramatically it seems to be correct. [usage of 'compared with']

contrast in this case is between 'trade imbalances' and 'trade deficit' So, the second clause should start with trade deficits. A is correct B) wrong since comparison is not correct. B seems to be wrong for 2 reasons -

especially one - one can refer to course of action or executive
misinterpreting ones - ones is ambigious here

I think E is correct. ['likely to' is correct, miss and misinterpret parallel]

the sentence is in past tense. So A is wrong

B) 'the large scale introduction' and 'the substitution' are parallel. 'of enclosed fields' and 'of new farming methods....' are parallel. involved is correct tense.

C) usage of which is wrong here

D) not parallel
E)not parallel
