How closely is one supposed to match the given word counts? Are they to be considered hard upper limits? (Specifically LBS and INSEAD)

For the GMAT, work experience does not matter at all. For Bschool applications it is highly dependent on the school.

I would suggest to do the first MGMAT CAT upfront to see where you strenghts and weaknesses are. You may not need to do all of them front to back. Well I had skimmed both the Princeton Guide and Kaplan Premier, but honestly, I found RC and CR to be by far the easiest part of the GMAT. Having done some Master of Finance classes while getting my norma MA, I would assume a huge difference.
