possessive nouns can serve as antecedents only to possessive pronouns.
Its is singular. so it can only refer to Parasite, not to Hosts (plural).
further , Its can refer to Parasite's as its is a possessive pronoun.
this is just my guess. to be sure we need expert guidance.
