Ian, that was a nice post of yours.. Practically, the divisibility test by 2,3,5 only works when we solve a problem. We feel tough to use other methods or either forget the exact method. Moreover questions in GMAT are quite simple and it doesn't require such tricks every now and then. The method you...

Just want to confirm the replies given above -- it's exactly right that you CAN'T simplify root(y^2) to y safely, for precisely the reason explained: if y is negative, root(y^2) will NOT equal y but rather the opposite of y. Thanks Ashley for confirming my post... 'I'm not not a girl... hehhehehhe ...

Taking into consideration "Divisibility by 7", I have posted a similar steps on my blog-post. http://mba.webmaggu.com/divisibility-by-7/ Though checking divisibility by this method is quite repetitive and cumbersome. So I would better recommend to divide the number simply by 7 and get the ...

Thanks Ashley. One quick question. Can we write the equation like 5-y = -3 by canceling square root with square? since √y² is positive so you can't write √y² = y as we don't know whether y is positive or not but we certainly know that √y² is positive. so we can write √y² = |y| hence √...

√y² = |y|vidhya16 wrote:5 -√y² = -3 .Whats the value of y?
Ta
so 5 -√y² = -3 -> 5 -|y| = -3
case 1: if y>0, 5-y = -3 -> y= 8
case 2: if y<0, 5-(-y) = -3 -> y=-8
so y = 8 or -8.

P.S. Shortcuts only work for you, when you have command over subject, your basics is clear and you can solve the problem with long method. If you are not able to solve problems by proper method, shortcuts will certainly lead you to crapy answers. These strategies are not intended to replace mathema...

But you cant be very sure with these type of solutions and ultimately land up with wrong solution. For eg. IF we go by question, cost of 50 kale is t dollars which shows that "t" is dimensionless and its unit is dollar. though in answers no unit is specified.... If we go by your method, it...

What are the values of X? | 3 + 2x | > |4 - x | lets solve it this way.. case 1 : 3+2x>0 -->x>-3/2 and 4-x>0-->x<4 so | 3 + 2x | > |4 - x | --> 3+2x > 4-x --> 3x>1 --> x>1/3. overall : 1/3<x<4. case2 : 3+2x>0 --> x>-3/2 and 4-x<0 --> x>4 so | 3 + 2x | > |4 - x | --> 3+2x > x-4 --> x>-1. overall : x...

What would be the solution for |X| - |Y| = |X+Y| ; XY != 0 ; X and Y are integers. Can anyone please provide algebraic method ? Here's what I did:- Squaring on both sides and using Schwarz Inequality, -2|X||Y| =< 2|XY| Therefore, 4|XY| > 0 therefore, XY > 0 ??? The answer is wrong. I am lost. Can a...

Which of the 5 terms p, q, p + q, p – 1, and q + 1, represents the median of these 5 terms? (1) p > q (2) p – q < 1 Is there a way to do this without plugging? Median is a type of average, found by arranging the values in order and then selecting the one in the middle. so lets start arranging a...
