Absolute Value basics

I need help knowing the basic rule of absolute values. I've always been taught that anything inside the " | x | " absolute value sign always comes out positive. I am learning that is not always the case. What should I know about absolute value when it comes to the GMAT? Thx :)

"Which of the following could be true?" Questions

Anyone has any advice on how to approach these problems? I keep getting them wrong in my practice problems, and I know I had the same issue with them in the SAT's. These are the problems that give you Statement (I), (II), and (III) and asks you which of them are true.
