Mitch definitely had the most efficient solution. This is a timed test. Anyways, i will offer a complete algebraic solution that enables one to solve this problem without plugging in at all. We have two equations. Let x represent how many hours both machines work together. Let p represent how many h...

these problems can be solved using this equation. Job/hour * hours = job a does .1 jobs per hour. B does .25, and c does .2 together in one hour they do .55 of the job. So .45 of the job is left .45 is = to .05 (9) or (1/20)(9) Since C takes 5 hours to complete the job he takes 5/20 or 1/4 of an hou...

This is actually a mixture problem that many algebra 1 students have exp with. First mixture is (2/7) oxygen Second is 1/5 oxygen After mixing it becomes 3/13 Oxygen (2/7)x+(1/5)y=(3/13)(x+y) After doing some algebra (multiply both sides by (13X7x5) we get x/y=14/25 In terms of carbon the equation w...

1/3 +1/9 +1/27=x

1+1/3 +1/9=3x

2x=1-1/27=26/27

x=13/27

so by visualizing a number line it is clear choice c works

a/b=1/3 since we obtain an exact answer, we can suppose a=1 and b=3 so c must =1.5 since b/c=2 d= 3 using same reasoning e=1 f=4 We have easy values to work with and have satisfied the ratio conditions. abc= 1(3)(1.5)=4.5 def=3(1)(4)=12 we obtain 4.5/12 =9/24 and dividing numerator and denominator b...

I see comversions to 1/8 mile per minute but that isn't necessary. He has gone 3.25 miles. Then he goes for 50 mins at a rate of 8 mins per mile. So (8/1)=(50/x) X=50/8 or 6.25 So total distance is 3.25 +6.25=9.5 Half of that is 4.75. He already went 3.25 miles. He can go 4.75-3.25 more miles south.
