The question is asking what percent of lights that are switched on are supposed to be switched off? let total lights be = 100 so 80% or 80 are supposed to be switched on, and 40% of lights that are supposed to be switched off are on, hence 40% of remaining 20 which are supposed to be off are on. i.e...

let additional hours= x

so We get the below equation:

40*6 + 60*x / 6+x = 55

solving for x we get x = 18

hence total journey = 18+6 = 24 hours.

I did it by the basic method by finding the mean and median for each.. First take the mean for all by = sum of numbers / number of terms, so mean for R= 86/20 Q= 84/21= 4 P= 68/17=4 then find the median (middle number or average of middle numbers if number of terms is odd) which for P & Q is als...

oops, sorry thanks for correcting me. then you can just take from 1,2 but why you couldn't solve using 2,3. it does satisfy the equation.

if you take x=-2 and y=-3, the equation does not satisfy so y has to be greater than = to 0

next if you take x=1 and y=0, still the equation does not satisfy so y has to be grater than 0

try x=2 and y=1, the equation satisfies hence y can be anything greater than 0

so answer is B

Lets assume below -:

John's speed = x
Jack's speed = y

so we will have 2 equations -:

eq1
x + y = 20

eq2 (increasing jack's speed by 25%)
x + 1.25y = 22

By solving the 2 equations you will get
x= 12
y= 8

hence ratio will be 8/12=2/3 (ANS D)
