I also go to A but spend a lot of time not to read the passage but to differentiate the close answer choices.

remember, had done is used to show a sequence. if you want to use had done, you have to find/see a sequence.

modifier should be close the the noun modified. modifier is difined grammatically. in E, expatriate is not modifier of Baker.
