There is a difference in the construction of A and E. A) puts stress on Darwin while E) puts stress on the proposal. Since first clause stresses on people and not their achievements, option A) is a better choice.

"and" is the only additive phrase which which changes the two singular subjects to plural. Hence and is followed by are. a can be used to specify the breakfast which is singular. My take would be on option B)

The touch rule states that the noun modifier and the noun must be next to each other. A follows the touch rule and so we know it modifies Lou and not his endurance/consistency. Moreover, as far my understanding is correct, known always refers to singular entities and not plural.
