I applied to 6 schools in total, 2 top 10, 3 top 20, and my back-up (Georgetown). Dinged from the top 10 schools and surprisingly my back-up, but I still have a smile on my face

"a number" is plural
"the number" would be singular
For A and B, "may be" is redundant b/c likely is used in the beginning of the sentence
