I think I'm wrong becasue I'm getting a fractional answer but here goes: Get everything in terms of one work w. 1/(y+2) + 1/y = 1/(5/12) 4/(y+2) = 12/5 y = 1/3 x = (y+2) = 7/3 So it takes 7/3 days for X to finsih 1 w. For 2 it takes 14/3 days or ~ 4.6 days. I'll go with 4 days. Can someone say wher...

Re: Work problem.

Running at their respective constant rates, machine X takes 2 days longer to produce w widgets than machine Y. At these rates, if the two machines together produce 5/4 w widgets in 3 days, how many days would it take machine X alone to produce 2w widgets? A. 4 B. 6 C. 8 D. 10 E. 12 Y can produce w ...

Your method looks fast enough, but for bigger numbers (or if you are not comfortable with square roots) you may want to try something like this:

sqrt[(16.32+8.32)]=sqrt[(4.4.2.2.5+4.4.2.2.4)]=sqrt[4.4.2.2.(5+4)]=
sqrt[(4.4.2.2.3.3)]= 4.2.3=24

Total time taken for the two segments of x-5 miles @ 60mph and 5 miles @ 30mph= (x-5)/60 + 5/30 = (x-5+10)/60 = (x+5)/60 Time taken if all of x miles were traveled @ 60mph = x/60 Extra time take when 5 miles was done @ 30mph = (x+5)/60 - x/60 =5/60 Percentage increase= (increase/original)*100 = [(5/...

Re: Be Careful!!

1) If m > 0, y > 0, and x is m percent of 2y, then, in terms of y, m is what percent of x? x=(m/100)*2y=2ym/100=ym/50 m=Z percent of x, we need to find Z Z=m*100/x=m*100/(ym/50)=5000/y 2) A certain NYC taxi driver has decided to start charging a rate of r cents per person per mile. How much, in dol...

AB=OC (given) and OC=OB (since both are radii of the semicircle) => AB=OC=OB =>angles BAO=BOA=OBC=OCB=x (angles opposite equal sides) We need to find x. 1. COD is 60 BOA+BOC+COD=180 (supplementary angles) x+(180-2x)+60=180 We can find x, so STM 1 is suff. 2.BCO=40 i.e. x =40 STM 2 is suff. So answer...

x-y

If x is not equal to -y, is [(x-y)/(x+y)]>1? 1. x>0 2. y<0 I tried the following approach: [(x-y)/(x+y)]>1 so, x-y>x+y or, 2y<0, or y<0. Alternatively, [(x-y)/(x+y)]>1, or [(x-y)/(x+y)]-1>0, or [-2y/(x+y)]>0, or -2y>0, or y<0 Thus I chose B, but the correct choice is E. Now knowing the answer, I tri...

jogging x mph for t1 h gives distance = x*t1 walking y mph for t2 h gives distance = y*t2 both the above distance are same, so x*t1=y*t2 Total time t= t1+t2 Putting the value of t1=t-t2 gives x*(t-t2)=y*t2, or x*t = (x+y)*t2 or, t2=x*t/(x+y) Therefore. the required distance is y*t2 = xyt/(x+y) - cho...

Start w/ the smallest number of "lenght" 6, i.e. 2^6 = 64
Next, replace one of the 2s with 3 to get 2^5*3=32*3 =96

Any other prime added in the above fashion will be a 3 digit number, so the answer is two (64 and 96)

2 ways to solve: 1. The quick way 70% of 800 employees = 0.7*80 = 560 [(560-y)/(800-y)]*100 should equal 60. Start plugging the answer choices: y=200 gives (360/600)*100 which is what we want, so answer is A 2. The longer way 70% of 800 employees = 0.7*80 = 560 So (560-y) = (60/100)*(800-y) 5600 - 1...

x^2-(by)^2 = (x+by)(x-by)

The 4 given terms can combine in (4*3)/2 ways to give 6 terms which are products of the respective terms.

There is only one set of prodcuts which is of the form required: (x+y)(x-y)

So, probability = 1/6
