Hi,

Can anyone help me with this:

Additive phrases like 'in addition to', 'along with' unite two or more singular subjects, yet require us to maintain the singular form of verb.

But if one subject is singular and the other is plural, what should be the number of verb?(Singular or plural ?)

Please tell me which one is correct among the following two sentences:

1. The Coach along with the players is tired after the match ?

2. The Coach along with the players are tired after the match ?

The rule for additive phrase is this..

If the subject before the additive phrase is singular go with singular verb and vice-versa.

The subject after the additive phrase has no bearing on the verb of the sentence.

So in the question above The Coach...is CORRECT.
