does "rather than" differ frm "than" in terms of grammar usage after "rather than" and "than" ?

A and B are out because of beginning of sentence. D is out becuase it uses the word LESSEN instead of shorten. THe topic at hand is countable and LESSEN is used for uncountable things like pain. You are left with C and E but C is wordy so you are left iwth E. Choose it.
