SC- 813

by sanjaylakhani » Fri Jul 04, 2008 6:46 pm
813). The question of whether to divest themselves of stock in companies that do business in South Africa is particularly troublesome for the nation’s 116 private Black colleges because their economic bases are often more fragile than most predominantly White colleges.
(A) than

(B) than those of

(C) than is so of

(D) compared to

(E) compared to those of

Why is C preferred as compared to E

Is it that in E- "as" is missing

the economic bases of the white colleges are compared to the black colleges.

So - answer (B) "Than those of" is appropriate.

IMO B

'than is so of" doesn't sound correct. It would rather have been 'than is THAT of'.

here we are comparing the similarities and differences between two like things, so compared to is inappropriate.

IMO C.

to refer things/nouns we use 'those'/'it'
to refer 'actions' we use 'so'

eg. He needs to do 'it' is wrong.

"compared to" is wrong
"than" makes wrong comparison so wrong.

only answer left. C
When you think you can or you cannot, you are generally correct.

Arent we comparing economic bases of colleges here?

Hence where is the question of comparing actions....

IMO B....comparing economic bases , hence "than those of"
