In 2003, cyclist Lance Armstrong became the first American to win the Tour de France five times, moreover, in 2005 he became the world record holder by winning his seventh consecutive Tour.

(A) cyclist Lance Armstrong became the first American to win the Tour de France five times, moreover,
(B) Lance Armstrong, a cyclist, won the Tour de France five times, which was the first time an American had done so, then
(C) cyclist Lance Armstrong became the first American to win the Tour de France five times;
(D) Lance Armstrong won his fifth Tour de France for the first time as an American who was a cyclist, and
(E) cyclist Lance Armstrong became the first five-time winner of the Tour de France among Americans, moreover

Karthik

IMO C
Sentence says two events
1. In 2003, Lance Armstrong became the first American to win the Tour de France five times
2.In 2005, he became the world record holder by winning his seventh consecutive Tour.

A: 2 complete setences are connected by no conjuction - wrong
B: which doesnot modify any noun sensible , it seems to modify verb won
'what was the first time an american had done' - won but its a verb and which cannot refer to verb
C: looks OK -complete sentence; complete sentence
D: changes meaning
it says he won his fifth tour for the first time as american meaning for the last four times he won
he was not american, not intended from A.
We want to say : He won medal fives times, He was the first american to win the medal five times
Also who is far away from Lance Armstrong and seems to modify American
E: 2 complete setences are connected by no conjuction - wrong

Choice C is correct.

In A, as written, the sentence is a run-on. The conjunctive adverb moreover is paired only with a comma to separate the independent clauses "cyclist Lance Armstrong became..." and "he became"

E repeats the error.

B uses another conjunctive adverb, then, to combine the clauses.

Only choices C and D fix the run-on; since choice D is awkwardly worded, choice C is the answer.

This is a good example of one of my favorite tips: on longer sentences, check links between clauses first. In this case, the original sentence has two independent clauses, but it attempts to connect them with "moreover." We know that we need to use a semicolon or a conjunction.
