Redesigned check

by Dean Jones » Sat Nov 26, 2011 10:47 pm
Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

The principal feature of the redesigned checks is a series of printed instructions that
the company hopes will help merchants confirm a check's authenticity, which
includes reminders to watch the endorsement, compare signatures, and view
the
watermark while holding the check to the light.

A. which includes reminders to watch the endorsement, compare signatures, and view
B. which include reminders for watching the endorsement, to compare signatures and
view
C. by including reminders for watching the endorsement, comparing signatures, and
viewing
D. including reminders to watch the endorsement, comparing signatures and viewing
E. including reminders to watch the endorsement, compare signatures, and view

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

My choice was option C

Regards
Deano.

The construction requires last modifier to modify the main clause ("The principal feature of the redesigned checks is a series of printed instructions"). Therefore drop A/B - note which modifies 'check's authencity.

Drop D - ||lelism issue

C vs E

C - Look at another sentence "The risk of transmission in a couple can further be reduced by a short pre-exposure prophylaxis with tenofovir". The use of BY shows a means of achieving something- just like BY STUDYING THE RULES, WE CAN EXCEL. The intent of ORIGINAL sentence is NOT TO SHOW THE subtle causality using 'BY PHRASE'. To understand it more clearly, let's reposition the sentence 'By including reminders for watching the endorsement (etc), the principal feature of the redesigned checks is a series of printed instructions". Lets ask ourselves whether it makes sense - does the subtle casuality correct here.

E - shows that INCLUDING ... modifies the complete main clause correctly and clearly gives examples of the series of printed instructions. Also parallelism is maintained

IMO E

options A & B are wrong because they have 'which' - used to modify the preceding word only.

D is incorrect as no parallelism.

C is incorrect as 'by' is used. If we have to use 'by' we need to lose the comma here and comma is not underlined for correction.

E - best option as all the other parameters work. Parallelism is also correct.

IMO - E

C is incorrect because of the usage of "by"

The principal feature of the redesigned checks is a series of printed instructions that the company hopes will help merchants confirm a check's authenticity,

Please note the "comma" here - Here you need a adverb modifier that will modify the whole clause. So you cannot use "by". Hence C is wrong. You need a modifier starting with a participle.

IMO : E

By including changes the meaning.. Option C reflects on to 'principal feature' and says principal feature is responsible for the 3 ways.
Company proposed the 3 ways not the feature.. for C to be correct..

By including the 3 ways, THE COMPANY beleives that the feature instructions will help.
