Quant guidance

by Vidhee » Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:17 am
Hi
I am a Commerce graduate and plan to study Marketing Communications.
I was planning to take GMAT in December but I was extremely nerve wrecked.
I can cope with Verbal but Quant is a nightmare for me.
I've never been good at Math since school.
Even my aptitude test results pointed out my Math weakness.
So I've decided to start all over again. I am taking it up as a challenge.
This will be like proving to myself.
It will be very helpful if someone could guide me at this stage about the correct books and approach.
I wish to take the test in early April.
Currently, I am referring to :
MGMAT Strategy Guides
OG 12
Kaplan 800

I'm new here, Hi to everyone :)

Hi, I am also starting and nervous about the quant. What most people seem to be saying is know the basics cold. Once you know the basics inside and out, start by doing problems. Then go over the ones you got wrong to make sure never to do the same thing again and to see perhaps a different way of approaching the problem.

Have you taken any prep test? how much did you get?
Take a gmat prep test are old gmat prep( gmatprepv1) if you want to keep the new tests for later.

GMAT tests few concepts-- take is each question and master that concept.

For example, in my experience first question is always - testing powers.

When you do problems -- make a notes of 5 problems of each concept- this will be helpful

1. ex: (a^b)(c^d)/(a^k)(c^m)
2. GMAT expect you to know simple interest and compound interest -
3. Mixer problem
4. speed problem.
5. expression reductions using a^2 - b^2 = (a+b)(a-b)
6. even numbers , odd numbers
remainders -- ex: divisibility -
7. problem that requires enumeration of numbers/primes:
ex: number of numbers that are factors of both 2 and 3 and that are smaller than 100; -->
8. factors/prime factors:
concept testing 2 is the only prime number;
9. statistics:
mean -- maximizing the smallest number;
mode

10. concept testing ratios: a,b,c are in the ratio 9: 5: 2; b can be 10; what is the value of a?

-- So do each concept; give the test ; as your score increases..you going to see difficult problems in each concept.. You iterate..
Leave the difficult concept to the end-- say for ex: probability, inequalities etc- these need lot of preparation and math gurus often make mistakes. Use the prep time wisely.

I'm new here, Hi to everyone :)
You might also want to consider signing up for BTG's 60-Day Study Guide (https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-guide).

It breaks all of the content (math and verbal) into bite-sized pieces, and it suggests several additional learning resources for each topic (for example, on the days when you study Geometry, you are directed to extra videos and articles to supplement your studies.)
The Guide will also keep you on track, and it will ensure that you cover all of the concepts necessary for the test.

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks a lot guys...
After taking all your suggestions into account, I've decided to start studying from tomorrow .
I guess the only way to crack Quant is through diligent practice & some logic. Don't have to be a pro at Math or possess genius Math skills.
Even I feel hopeful now.
Thanks again
