Question 13 in 1000SC
13. A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but that they will, or could, be made sufficiently safe in the future.
(A) that they will, or could,
(B) that they would, or could,
(C) they will be or could
(D) think that they will be or could
(E) think the power stations would or could

I thought answer e is correct because "they" was very ambiguous and in e it is clearly states it is power station.
But the answer given is D. As u all know there is no explanation for the answer.

answer is D.

a majority surveyed view...think

these verbs have to be parallel, so it's down to D or E

i didn't think that 'they' was a vague pronoun. the problem i see in choice E is that the verbs wouldn't be parallel: would be or could be would be better.

it's really down to D & E. But the problem with D is seen in the word "they". It is not clear whether "they" is pertaining to the journalists or the power stations. So, E is the right answer.

The answer is down to D & E. But the problem with E is :
i) the words "power stations" have been used redundantly, and secondly
ii) the word "they". in case of D is clear whether "they" is pertaining to the journalists or the power stations.
So, D is the right answer

Is "think that" an idiom ?
If "think that" is not an idiom, then answer choice D is clearly wrong.

I don't know but D seems to make the most sense.

A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but that they will, or could, be made sufficiently safe in the future.

(A) that they will, or could, ( not parallel )
(B) that they would, or could, ( not parallel )
(C) they will be or could ( not parallel )
(D) think that they will be or could
(E) think the power stations would or could [/quote] ( wordy and THE is wrong )

D as in DRACULA!

E is wrong because it cannot be "think the power stations....." . It has to be "think that the power stations..."

I choose D. I agree that "the" is not required and that "they" is not ambiguous, hence power stations is redundant.

At the same time why does it have to be "think that"

Parallelism view x....think y. Is that necessary?

I modified it as

A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but think that they will work to get safety requirements in place.

I dont see any gap in second choice, where they refers to journalists.

Comments please!!

We shouldnt forget how wrong SC could be, if the source is not authentic.
Here. I agree with GG04 and it should be E.

A) that they will, or could, - but that...doesnt make sense to me.
(B) that they would, or could, -but that...doesnt make sense to me.
(C) they will be or could -but that...doesnt make sense to me.
(D) think that they will be or could - They is ambigous.

(E) think the power stations would or could - It should be think that the
power station....

Pls tell me , 'but...that' is this the correct usage.

hey E cannot be the answer for 2 reasons...
1) because its not parallel...will or could be...
will be or could be is better.
2) they usage of they is correct is D...because A majority of the international journalists is plural...
so hence D.

anyone please confirm my understanding... :)
