The resume is a pretty simple document, right? Don't be fooled! It can be, and often is, the downfall of many an unprepared applicant. Why? Adcom members reviewing your application will spend less than a minute on their first pass through resume, and it is usually the first part of the application they see. Within that window, your reviewer will create a crucial first impression of you as a person, employee, and future student. This first impression will determine if you will start out fighting an uphill battle to make into the yes pile or set you up in a positive light that will help the rest of your application shine.

Take the time to really comb through your resume to make sure it hits the right high points. Is your resume starting off with your strongest examples first? Does it show a logical progression of a person who is moving up in his or her career through growing roles and responsibilities? Does each example come together to portray a clear representation? And it's not just about what you say, it's about HOW you say it. Are you using the right language? Does it accurately capture the essence of the activity or accomplishment?

One simple way to gauge the first impression that you resume makes is to hand an anonymous copy of your resume to someone who isn't familiar with your background. Then give that person 60 seconds to read over the resume before having them describe the person behind the resume. Does the description sound generic? What were the things that jumped out?

Remember - you never get a second chance at a first impression! So invest time in crafting your resume! It might take a dozen rounds of edits but it is worth every second!

When you have your resume drafted, remember - an experienced 2nd perspective can go a long way! At Critical Square, Our Resume Editing service marries your story, messaging, and accomplishments into a narrative that'll leave the adcom wanting more! Learn more [here]!
