Profile eval & school short listing

by bourneJ » Sat Nov 12, 2011 12:55 pm
Hi,
Exp: 5+ years as a techie in USA
Education: MS comp sc. (3.25)
GMAT : 570 (current) retaking GMAT before sending out applications

I know that my score is pretty low for all the listed schools. But if I manage to increase it by 100 points , would I have a decent chance at these schools.
Target schools:
Nanyang Singapore
NUS Singapore
HKUST Hong Kong
INSEAD Singapore
IMD

Thanks

Hi bourneJ --

We have very little experience with any Asian schools (besides ISB) so we'll leave those for someone else to comment on.

For INSEAD and IMD, yes, a GMAT in the 670 range would put you in the running, in terms of basic qualifications.

Both these schools look for leadership and achievement (well, pretty much every school does!!) -- but the reason we say this is that these two schools are less obsessed with a specific GMAT score, and more interested in what you present in terms of accomplishments and professional readiness.

If your undergrad GPA is in the same range or better than your Master's, then you should be fine in terms of standard quals to try for these programs. And your amount of work experience is appropriate, too.

So, yes, focus in on that GMAT and knock it out of the park! And also make the essays shine. You can have a chance at these programs with those two things nailed down.

(Not a trivial task, of course...! Good luck with it!)

Thanks for the prompt reply. I ' m still trying to gauge whether with a good score do I stand a good chance or not.

Admissions decisions are not based on GMAT score alone. If you have a 670, you would have A chance; it is up to the rest of your application to determine if you have A GOOD chance.

Depends on lots of other stuff too, like leadership, promotion scale, other things you have done, academics. But you might also need a bit more than a 670 to give yourself the best possible chances.
