Is a 34V really a bad score?

by Sb273 » Thu Feb 20, 2014 7:23 am
I've heard time and time again that a 34V is a weak score. I dont understand why this is considered weak since this score equates to 70th percentile. A 47Q is also 70th percentile but I haven't heard anyone say this is a weak score. Is a 34V really going to hold me back? I did get a 6 on the AWA, would this help my case in anyway? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

My total score was a 650 and I am targeting schools in the 15-25 range.

Hey there,

That's a good question. You have to look at scores both from a percentile and a raw perspective. So yes, a 47Q and a 34V are roughly equivalent in terms of percentiles, but not from a raw point of view. a 47 is just a few points shy of a perfect score. The percentile in the quant section is a testament to the strength of other test takers, not the lack of knowledge on behalf of the test taker.

So to your question, a 34 isn't a great verbal score. Raw or percentile wise. It isn't terrible either. It's..."eh", for lack of a better term. It's also what is holding down your overall score. Now, that said, your overall score (650) is well below the average of every school in the 15 - 25 range. So that's not a good place to be. It's in the 80th percentile range for all, but just barely for most.

Your 6 on the AWA section is good in that the adcom knows you can write decently well but that doesn't help your score at all. So it also doesn't help their rankings either.

I don't know what your split was but given that it's February and you're most likely not looking at R3 apps, I'd say consider retaking it. You don't want your GMAT score to be the thing that holds you back and at the moment it's risking to do just that.

Let me know if that helps or if you have any questions!
