Princeton Practice Test DS problems

by vaibhav.iit2002 » Sun Aug 30, 2009 5:56 am
Hi,

Following are given 2 DS problems from Princeton Full length tests:

a. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
b. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
c. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
d. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
e. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT SUFFICIENT

1. Of the 9,000 people who voted in a recent election, how many women voted for candidate X?

(1) The percentage of women voting for candidate X was twice the percentage of women voting

against candidate X.
(2) Three thousand men voted for candidate X.

Ans: E

I think it is possible to answer using both statements as women voters=6000. Hence women voting for X=4000, against X=2000

Am I wrong?

2. Seventy percent of the 30,000 trees in an orchard are apple trees, and the rest are pear

trees. What percent of the trees in the orchard were planted this year?

(1) The number of apple trees that were planted prior to this year is 14 times the number of

pear trees that were planted this year.
(2) The number of pear trees planted prior to this year is 8 times the number of pear trees

that were planted this year.

Ans.: C

Had it mentioned that trees have been planted only in previous and current year, ans. would be justified but nowhere it is mentioned and hence trees might have been planted in 4-5 years so how can we find answer by information of last and current year data only?

IMHO,

1) E, because 9000 is total people voting men+Women both for and against. so you cannot say 6000 are women because you dont know how many men voted against X or total men.

2) C
