Perfect approach!

ASIDE: We have 4 teams, and 2 teams play a game.
So, the number of games played = the number of different ways to select 2 of the 4 teams = 4C2 = 6

Each group plays 4C2 = 6 games and we have 8 groups.
Thus, the group stage includes 6*8 = 48 games.

Therefore, the answer is C.

The number of games played in each group is 4C2 = (4 x 3)/2 = 6. Since there are 8 groups in the group stage, the number of games played in the group stage is:

8 x 4C2 = 8 x 6 = 48

Answer: C
