A certain business printer can print 40 characters per second, which is 4 times as fast as an average printer. If an average printer can print 5 times as fast as an electric typewriter, how many characters per minute can an electric typewriter print?
(A) 2
(B) 32
(C) 50
(D) 120
(E) 600cth

x = speed of average printer

y = speed of electric typewriter

Business printer can type 40 characters per second = 4 (x)

x = 10

x = 5 (y)

y = 2 (this is per second)

For a minute = 2 * 60 = 120

Choose (D)

B = 40 CPS
Also,
B = 4A = > A= 10 cps
A = 5E => E = 2cps

E= 2cps x 60 sec = 120 cpm

Since the rate of a business printer is 40 characters per second, then the rate of an average printer is 10 characters per second, and the rate of an electric typewriter is 2 characters per second. Therefore, in one minute, the electric typewriter can print 2 x 60 = 120 characters.

A certain business printer can print 40 characters per second...
40 x 60 = 2400
So, the business printer can print 2400 characters PER MINUTE

..., which is 4 times as fast as an average printer.
2400/4 = 600
So, the average printer can print 600 characters PER MINUTE

If an average printer can print 5 times as fast as an electric typewriter...
500/5 = 120
So, the electric typewriter can print 120 characters PER MINUTE

... how many characters per minute can an electric typewriter print?
Answer: 120 (D)
