Even though only 5 percent

by BTGmoderatorDC » Thu Jan 25, 2018 5:38 am
Even though only 5 percent of people living in Hutorsville own guns, the Hutorsville Police Department reported that 25 percent of those arrested for robberies in Hutorsville had guns. Clearly, a person who has a gun is more likely to commit robbery regularly than a person who does not have a gun.

The conclusion drawn above depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A)People who have guns are more likely to rob someone rather than to murder.
(B)People who were arrested for robbery were more likely to commit robberies regularly than people who were not arrested.
(C)People who have guns are less likely to be arrested while committing a robbery.
(D)Many people who were arrested for robbery have been arrested before.
(E)reports in other towns are very different from the report of the Hutorsville Police Department.

What's the best approach to determine the answer?

Conclusion: Some with a gun is more likely to commit a robbery
Premise: People with guns are disproportionately likely to be arrested for robbery.

Notice the language shift. We're using data about robbery arrests to draw a conclusion about the likelihood of committing robberies. For this line of reasoning to be valid, there must be a correlation between incidence of robbery arrests and likelihood to commit robbery. This is what B gives us.
