Profile Evaluation Request

by bseballdude11 » Sat Apr 04, 2015 10:23 pm
White Male

Undergrad: Economics from UC Riverside

GPA: 3.11

GMAT: 720

Extracurricular: 4 year baseball player for University team.

Work experience: Ran part time ebay business in college with $30,000 in sales in 3 years.
Internship with Bridgestone Retail Operations for 2 months.
Offered full time position after internship and promoted to Manager of Tire Sales and have currently held position for 1 full year.

Goals: I would love to get into management consulting with a company like McKinsey or BCG. With my work experience and schooling I feel a solid mba is necessary to make this happen.

My questions are,

1. How competitive am I for the Southern California programs? (USC and UCLA)

2. Are financial aid packages generous at these schools?

3. What do I need to make myself a better applicant?

Thank you!

Hey dude,
Good to hear from you!

Nice pull on that GMAT!

So the first thing (I guess as you know) is that you shouldn't be applying till Sept 2016 for the 2017 intake. (Unless you have a really good reason). One year experience in a consumer goods firm will likely be too little for most schools.

But no biggie (that's sooo 90s).. it gives you another year to work on improving your profile.

So what to do in the meanwhile?
- bolster your volunteer work
- find some leadership something (be it in politics, at church, at work, at the pool, on the court, whatever)
- Do real well in your job
- Visit the schools you are thinking about.

If things go well, I don't see why you shouldn't be competitive at UCLA and USC too!

Best,
Jon
