{B} INCORRECT; "how heat .." is not parallel with "the formation.."
{C} INCORRECT; "are" is incorrect
{D} INCORRECT; "are" is incorrect
{E} INCORRECT; "VERB+IN" either works as Adverbial or Adjectival. in both cases, the sentence loses its intended meaning.

The discovery that Earth's inner core rotates independently of and more quickly than Earth's outer layers is responsible for advancing studies of the flow of heat from the inner through the outer planet and of the formation and periodic reversal in direction of Earth's magnetic field.

A. core rotates independently of and more quickly than Earth's outer layers is
responsible for advancing studies of the flow of heat from the inner through the
outer planet and of the formation and periodic reversal in direction of Earth's
magnetic field
B. core rotates independently of and more quickly than Earth's outer layers is
responsible for advancing studies of how heat from the inner core flows through
the outer planet, and the formation and periodic reversal in direction of Earth's
magnetic field
C. core rotates independently and more quickly than Earth's outer layers are
responsible for advancing studies of how heat from the inner core flows through
the outer planet, and how Earth's magnetic field forms and the periodic reversal
of its direction
D. core, rotating independently and more quickly than Earth's outer layers, are
responsible for advancing studies of the flow of heat from the inner through the
outer planet, and the formation and periodic reversal in direction of Earth's
magnetic field
E. core, rotating independently of and more quickly than Earth's outer layers, is
responsible for advancing studies of the flow of heat from the inner through the
outer planet and of how Earth's magnetic field forms and the periodic reversal of
its direction
B: The discovery...is responsible for advancing studies and the formation...of Earth's magnetic field.
Here, the portions in red could a lead a reader to construe that the discovery is responsible for the formation of Earth's magnetic field.
Not the intended meaning.
Eliminate B.

C and D: The discovery...are responsible.
Here, are (plural) does not agree with discovery (singular).
Eliminate C and D.

A conjunction such as and must serve to connect PARALLEL FORMS.
E: how Earth's magnetic field forms and the periodic reversal of its direction
Here, how Earth's magnetic field forms (how + subject + verb) is not parallel with the periodic reversal of its direction (noun phrase + prepositional modifier).
Eliminate E.

The correct answer is A.

Can E also be eliminated because "rotating ...layers" is just acting as a modifiers and it also changes the meaning by not specifying "what the discovery actually is"

Hi Aman Ahuja,

You are correct - Answer E has some modification "problems" that change the meaning of the sentence and cause some unclear meaning.
