by kobel51 » Sat Dec 21, 2013 3:42 pm
What is the number of members of Club X who are at least 35 years of age?

1) Exactly 3/4 of the members of club X are under 35 years of age.

2) The 64 women in Club X constitute 40 percent of the club's membership.

does it matter whether there are children in the club?

Hi! We only care about at least 35 vs below 35, so "children" are irrelevant.

Q: how many members are 35 or older?

We think: value question asking us to solve for an actual number, so we need info about numbers!

1) nothing about actual numbers (i.e. just a fraction) - insufficient.

2) nothing about age breakdown - insufficient.

Eliminate A, B and D.

Together: (2) gives us a percent and a part, so we can figure out the whole, i.e. total number of members. Now we can use (1) to calculate how many members are 35 or older.

Together sufficient, choose (C)!
