MBA after an MS in USA

by mars22 » Mon Oct 14, 2013 1:48 pm
Hi,
I did my engineering in Electrical and Electronics from one of the good universities of India.
I secured a decent percentage of 7.5/10 with a number of significant international research projects and whole lot of leadership experiences.
I always wanted to do an MBA from the top B schools in USA( HARVARD, MIT, KELLOG etc..) I felt that with exceptional success and great passion through out in life for all my managerial/leadership experiences, an MBA from the best B school was surely an ideal destination for me.

To pursue the same I first did an MS in USA as i realized that it will exalt my profile and help me targeting best jobs in USA and the best B schools as well. I am pursuing my MS from Arizona State university which is a very well known university in the USA.
Now my Ms degree is about to get over. I was wondering that at this juncture should i enter a technical job related to my MS or somehow manage a job in Marketing or other managerial positions to secure a better place for marketing in MBA?? After building a strong tech profile with number of research experiences along with a number of managerial experiences i feel i have a good profile till date but without any job experience. So in a job what would should be my next target. I am confused as i feel that after doing an MS i have more probability of getting a core tech job which i am unsure would lead to a strong MBA profile. In case it will please let me know or in case you feel I should try for a marketing job profile then please help me out. In case you have any other suggestions, Please share the same with me:). Thanks!!

Hey dude, you came to the right place!

The question you want to ask yourself is what do you REALLY want to do? An MBA isn't the answer, because an MBA is only a path towards something. But what do you want to do, day-in, day-out.

You can get into an MBA from a Tech job (and plenty do) although yes, it's easier to get in from a consulting job. But just as important is that you succeed in your career whatever it is.

So what is it you want to do?

Thanks a lot for your response. I am most interested in Marketing and my skills and experiences have always pointed to the same. With strong communication skills, a highly analytic mindset and great leadership ability I feel Marketing is what I really want to do. Also, because I have been so interested in the same I wanted to do it from the best B schools. Hence i pursued the path as i mentioned in my previous message. But i am confused currently so as to where to go ? Please help :)

Well, if you KNOW you want to go into marketing, then it doesn't really make sense for you to work 3-4 doing a tech job even if you are trained for it right??? Probably your best bet would be to look for Marketing job in the industry in which you did your Masters, that way you can make good use of your studies.

I feel at this point your choice shouldn't be so much about "What will get me an MBA" but rather "What will I be interested in doing day-in day-out?"

Make sense?
