Need Help with Content Review Strategy!!

by mdecarbo » Mon Mar 18, 2013 5:52 pm
Hi,

I've been studying for the GMAT for about a month and a half now. I'm using the gmatprepnow Videos, following the OG in terms of practice, and using the beatthegmat.com's 60 day study guide as my guideline. I have about 20 days left in terms of study guide days and about a month and a half left until my exam (first week in May).

I'm ready to take the GMAT Prep #2 exam for the first time in order to gauge my raw score since I've gone through all the content and practiced the entire OG. My verbal is definitely stronger than my quant, although I have a lot of confidence that I can continue to improve both scores in order to score my desired 700+ on the test.

With that said, I was wondering if anybody could throw some advice out towards my way. I've finished the Math & Verbal reviews, I'm in the middle of IR, and will do some prep on the AWA soon. Now that I'm at a point where I'm going to be practicing a lot of what I've learned, does anybody have any advice/strategy on how to reinforce lessons learned from the content studying? Has anybody executed one or two strategies on how to continuously review material / content / test strategy in order not to freeze come test taking time? I have the GMAT flashcards, I've taken notes etc. I'm just not sure if I know the most effective way to reinforce earlier lessons.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey mdecarbo - it sounds like you've got a great plan in action and you're executing well! The one suggestion we can make would be to review the answers you get right - not just the ones you get wrong. We've heard about studies showing that this helps with learning retention. We wrote about GMAT study tips on the EssaySnark blahg just yesterday: https://essaysnark.com/2013/03/gmat-study-tips/

Hopefully others who are in the trenches with you will be able to offer up some additional tips and tricks.

Good luck on your studies and we hope you nail it!

Thanks for the reply essaysnark.

I just took the GMAT Prep test #2 to gauge my progress. Scored a 690 (42 Q (59%) & 42 V (95%)). Obviously need to do some work on the Q side. Does anybody have any ideas on best approaches? I know that everybody is different but thought I'd see what people think.

My goal is 700, but with the 690 and about 1+ month to go, I'm starting to think maybe even higher? 720, 730...

I am going to use the GMAT Quant review edition 2 for some additional study - and review all the answer explanations regardless of me answering them correct or not. I have been reviewing the beatthegmat flashcards too.

Thanks for the support! This is a great forum so I hope to get some additional insight!

Nice work, mdecarbo! A 690 is already a great score.
I agree; a 720+ score is within reach.

On the math side, you should be identifying weaknesses as you take practice tests and work on questions in the various official guides. Once you identify a content area to work on, you can use BTG's tagging feature to isolate one concept.
For example, here are all of the questions tagged as statistics questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... statistics
See the left side of that linked page for more tag options.

Keep working on one particular topic until you have mastered it. I also suggest that you spend a lot of time reviewing the responses from the Experts on this site. They model the steps you should be taking when tackling math problems.

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks Brent!

To that advice, is there a resource I can utilize that maps out the questions in the Quant Review 2nd Edition in terms of question type (ie. Algebra vs. Geometry etc.)?

That would definitely help my streamlining of the review.

Thanks!

Sorry - not that I know of.
Having said that, if you go to our site, you'll see that we have categorized questions in that book for each topic.
For example, at the bottom of this page https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat-geometry you'll see all of the Geometry questions categorized.

Cheers,
Brent

https://www.gmatquantum.com/

Found this resource that provides video explanations for the problems in the GMAT Quant 2nd Edition - I'm going to use this for my review and thought I'd share it with the forum.
