Work Experience-Advice needed!

by Suz » Mon Dec 03, 2012 2:49 am
Hi,

I needed some advice regarding my work experience prior to applying for an MBA. I have graduated from a top college in Delhi University, India after which I worked at a Big 4 consultancy for one year. I have two job offers to choose from now- Sales Role at Google or working with a startup Private Equity Fund. I'm wondering what would be better work experience for my MBA Application- should I stick to working for a brand or work with the PE Fund for the next 2/3 years. Please advise!

Thank you!

Hmm tough call. big name companies are good, but PE is a very attractive industry (and more unique and rare). I would say you could build an attractive profile with either offer, and would suggest you decide based on what offer you prefer for professional reasons.

Thanks Jon. The work at the PE firm was an internship to start with- and could have led to a job, wheras I had to get back to the other company(Google) about whether I wanted to take up the offer. I decided to be risk averse and take up the offer with Google. Would you say I took the right decision?

Thank you very much.

Well, it doesn't seem like a bad one! Especially if the salary and conditions are good. And if it interests you more, then it's definitely the right one.

Hi Suz,

I think it was a fine decision. A start-up PE fund, if not backed by strong promoters, can be dodgy in terms of survival of the fund itself especially in the current times when deals are difficult to source. Second, there is a higher risk of your role in a startup PE fund being less defined than that in Google.

Thank you! Ive been so confused about whether I took the right decision because PE is a really difficult line to break into and I thought I was losing out on an inroad. But your post really helped. My work& promotions will be much more structured at Google. Thanks so much!
