Tricky CR pharmaceutical company

by coolanubhav2002 » Sat Oct 27, 2012 3:30 am
A pharmaceutical company claims that its new drug promotes learning in children. To back up its claims, the company points to a study of 300 children who were given the drug, along with a control group of 300 children who were given a placebo. The 300 children who were given the drug reported that they were able to retain new information much more easily.

Which of the following statements, if true, would most tend to weaken the claims of the pharmaceutical company?

(A) The 300 children in the control group also reported that they were able to retain new information much more easily.
(B) The drug has also been shown to prevent common skin rashes.
(C) The drug has been proven to have severe side-effects.
(D) The children in the study were not given any other medications during the study.
(E) The children who were given the drug did better on cognitive measurement tests after the drug therapy than before.

OA: A

Ans A:

Weaken the conclusion.. by providing additional evidence or finding fault in the premise...
A) says control ground also did better so if both group did better on test.. There is no point in saying one group is better than other.
B, C is irrelevant
D and E is strenghtener..

(A) The 300 children in the control group also reported that they were able to retain new information much more easily. --Correct
(B) The drug has also been shown to prevent common skin rashes. irrelevant
(C) The drug has been proven to have severe side-effects. irrelevant
(D) The children in the study were not given any other medications during the study. This in fact strengthens the argument
(E) The children who were given the drug did better on cognitive measurement tests after the drug therapy than before.strengthens the argument
