Why is C wrong? OG Verbal

by bryan88 » Mon May 07, 2012 9:08 am
Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep from being stolen by invaders.

(A) to keep from
(B) to keep it from
(C) to avoid
(D) in order that it would avoid
(E) in order to keep from

I think that C is wrong because it is not "Avoid" but rather "prevent" that should be used.

Hence, I feel that the original is correct.

A!

I think the answer is B.

The pronoun IT is required to refer back to the chalice, and without the pronoun, to me it sounds awkward.

^Without the pronoun, the sentence sounds like the chalice itself is avoiding being stolen.

Please do not give any hint of the answer in the subject itself!

Explanation - keep, avoid, prevent are all transitive verbs
