New genetic evidence - together with recent studies of elephants' skeletons, tusks, and other anatomical features - provide compelling support for classifying Africa's forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species.
A. provide compelling support for classifying
B. provide compelling support for the classification of
C. provides compelling support to the classification of
D. provides compelling support for classifying
E. provides compelling support to classify
Ans: D
I know why Option A and B are wrong. But can anyone tell me why "for classifying" is correct? Is it because this is the correct idiomatic form? Why "to classify" is incorrect?

support to cannot be used with a verb. It can be used with a noun. (to + verb converts to its infinitive form, the use of to as a preposition is lost)
E.g.
We extend our wholehearted support to the distribution of food. - Correct
We extend our wholehearted support to distribute the food. - Incorrect
We extend our wholehearted support for distributing the food. - Correct
D is therefore correct.

A and B wrong because "provide" has to be singular
C changes the meaning of the sentence
support for/to has to be followed by noun .
i.e. D is correct .
experts please comment whether I am correct in my evaluation .
Also , please suggest why option E is correct in below question .
Warning that computers in the United States are not secure, the National Academy of Sciences has urged the nation to revamp computer security procedures, institute new emergency response teams, creating a special nongovernment organization to take charge of computer security planning.

Bro, i give u two hints to identify NOUN...can't tell u the source as don't remember where i read..aspirant2011 wrote:Hi Atul, atulmangal wrote:If the above reasons are correct then, in Op Cniksworth wrote:support to cannot be used with a verb. 1) if u are a bit confused that a particular word is NOUN or NOT then place the ARTICLE "THE" before it, if that makes sense (u have to rely on your ear) then that word is a NOUN.
The Distribute -----> Awkward (u have to rely on your ear)
The Distribution of ---> correct, again your ear gonna say its correct
2) Generally this -ion forms are nouns
for ex: erupt ---> Verb but eruption --> noun
similarly, Distribute ---> verb but Distribution ---> standard NOUN
One more concept i will share, may be u know this already..
Distributing ---> Gerund a noun
But, see the parallelism rule:
Distribution || The Distribution of
but both of these CAN NOT be parallel to DISTRIBUTING
this is a general rule, apply in all cases

(C) creating a special nongovernment organization for taking

we can quickly narrow it down to D and E on the basis of parallelism. We have "to revamp..., [to] institute..." as the first two items in our list, so we need "[to] create" as the third item. (The "[to]" is implied throughout the list.)
We use the infinitive form of the verb ("to take") since we have back to back verbs. "To create [it] to take" is stylistically superior to "to create [it] for taking". Accordingly, (E) is better than (D).

We need to understand whether it should be support to/for?
I feel in this case it should be support to...
Support to: The genetic evidence itself plays a role or probably act as one of the components those helped in the classification process. It plays a direct role. Probably, by being the basis on which the classification was done.
Support for: It seems to support indirectly. I mean classifying is the process and it just helped this ongoing process of classification. It probably means "in favour of"
and out of C and E. I will go with E as it is concise.
I feel option E is correct.

Could anyone shed some light on choice C?
C. provides compelling support to the classification of
Someone above said C changes the original meaning, but I can't get the point...
I learned from Ron's lecture on 2/16/2012 (https://www.manhattangmat.com/thursdays-with-ron.cfm)
that v-ing form should be used when the action is either a)personalized OR b)process-oriented, and that otherwise we would prefer the action noun (e.g."the exposure of").
I apply the concept to this problem, and think:
a)An unknown subject (e.g."scholars") does the action of classification
b)the context is not focused on the process of classification (I have a little doubt here)
why choose "for classifying" instead of "classification"?
Please help me understand this question and kindly correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you.

i received a private message regarding this thread.
e.g. there will be medical personnel present at the festival to provide support to victims of heat stroke and drug overdoses.
as for "classification" vs. "classifying" -- both of these work ok here. the first treats the system as something that basically just exists -- de-emphasizing the human aspect -- while the second places emphasis on the human act of classifying.
"provide support to" doesn't make sense here. that wording means, basically, the same as "provide assistance/help to", and is thus almost always followed by a person.thulsy wrote:Could anyone shed some light on choice C?
