Less than / lower / fewer

by sam2304 » Sun Dec 25, 2011 9:48 am
With total sales of less than three hundred thousand dollars and fewer new subscribers than last year, the New England Theater Company is in danger of losing its building.
(A) of less than three hundred thousand dollars and fewer
(B) lower than three hundred thousand dollars and less
(C) lesser than three hundred thousand dollars and fewer
(D) fewer than three hundred thousand dollars and less
(E) of fewer than three hundred thousand dollars and of fewer

OA after some discussions.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

I put my money on A
Less should be used while dealing with time , money.
Few should be used when dealing with people.

Answer - A.

Rule : Fewer is for countable items. Less is for non countable items.
Amount of money is non-countable item while subscriber can be counter.

With these rules, D,E and B are incorrect.

Rule: lesser than should be used when amount is compared to other amount so B is also incorrect.

i agree with A

sales is not getting compared with any other sales. so lesser or fewer than is wrong.
And subscribers are getting compared..this year's and last year's. so fewer is required.

only option A has both perfectly.
