Do schools really contact past or current employers? What kind of information do they ask if they contact employers?

Occasionally. Usually the school (or rather an agency) calls your employers to verify the information you are reporting about them - things like when you worked, your salary, your responsibilities, who manages you. Usually it doesn't go tooooo deep, but just to make sure that all the info is okay.
