How to report co-op experience

by bjam2 » Tue Aug 23, 2011 1:54 pm
So from what I've seen since starting my applications, its common to report work experience as either Full-time, Part-time, Internship, or Other. At time of admission I'll have around 4 years Full-time work experience, thats the easy part, prior to that my work experience is confusing since my school had a co-op program and I rotated between 3 months of school and 3 months of work.

Co-op with Company #1
April-June 2004
October-December 2004
April-June 2005
October-December 2005

Co-op with Company #2
April-June 2006
October-December 2006
April-June 2007

Kind of Co-op and kind of full-time with Company #2 (done with school and working in new position at new location but waiting on diploma for an offer)
April-September 2008

Can anyone give me any insight on how I should report all of this on my applications? I'm applying to top tier schools if that makes a difference. Also with the April-September 2008 period, I usually report it as full-time on my resume due to my title but I'm not sure how Company #2 would report it if asked.

Well, since it'd be to your advantage, and I think that in all honesty you could swing it either way, I'd go with reporting it full-time, but at the same time make sure that there's a clarification in one of your essays. Plus given the length of time, etc. it's basically a full time job with pauses. There's probably no need to write an optional essay about it, as it's likely to come up in your stories, but if not, then that's what I'd do.
