whose equity??

by smackmartine » Sat Jun 11, 2011 7:46 pm
There have been few discussions on this but they are not clear to me..so posting again

While depressed property values can hurt some large investors, they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose equity - in many cases representing a life's savings - can plunge or even disappear.

(A) they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose
(B) they can potentially devastate homeowners in that their
(C) for homeowners they are potentially devastating, because their
(D) for homeowners, it is potentially devastating in that their
(E) it can potentially devastate homeowners, whose

OA after some discussion. Please explain options briefly at least.

Can someone please explain to me why A is right ? how can we associate equity with a person? "whose equity" just doesn't sound correct. Am I missing something?

Sorry, posted in the wrong section....but pls comment!!!!!!!

Hi,
In every options equity is associated with persons. So, let's not waste time on that.

(A) they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose
(B) they can potentially devastate homeowners in that their (can potentially - redundant, 'in that their' is ambiguous and wordy)
(C) for homeowners they are potentially devastating, because their (ambiguous and wordy)
(D) for homeowners, it is potentially devastating in that their (ambiguous and wordy)
(E) it can potentially devastate homeowners, whose ('it cannot refer to depressed property values --> plural subject)
Cheers!

Things are not what they appear to be... nor are they otherwise

I too rejected all other options based on the same reasoning as you did, but my only confusion was that can equity be associated with person. I just found that dictionary meaning of equity is "The ownership interest of shareholders in a corporation". I think it's clearer to me now.

Thanks anyways.

in this context, "equity" refers to the value held in some investment (whether stock, real estate, or whatever else) by either an individual or a corporation.

hello
my approach is that
eliminate B and D because of wrong usage of "in that" idiom which distorts the meaning
eliminate E because "it" didnt refer values correctly.
eliminate c because referent of "thier" is not clear

please correct me if my approach is erroneous

looks good. note that (d) also contains the incorrect singular pronoun "it".
