Rotman interview next week.

by bblast » Thu Mar 31, 2011 2:35 am
Hello experts,
I am well prepared for the interview but I was looking for some good inputs on the Question :

Why Rotman ?

Please note that my field of MBA interest is operations.
Also please note that I am well prepared with my answer, so I am just looking at another perspective on this.
Cheers !!

Well Rotman's own perspective on its strengths are pretty clear from their documents. They think they have strong faculty, strong research, but particularly think the Integrative Thinking and Business Design elements of the program set them apart. If you are interested in that, take a little bit to understand it and maybe discuss why it fits into what you value.

But of course the best answer will be the specific reason you are wanting to go to Rotman - why is that?

I did my interview two weeks ago (and got an admit). Its very casual, not very intimidating, and with only one person, so its certainly not too stressful. Good luck!

Great, as well as a pleasant surprise to come across someone with a positive admit active on BTG, people usually abandon this place post GMAT. Anyways Derek, what are your plans for Rotman? Finance ?Are you joining ?

I know Rotman is specially good for Finance, but I am a manufacturing guy and have mostly concentrated on my applications for MBA in operations.
Do you have any idea how good is operations management at Rotman ? The information on the internet has been helpful but not wholesome during my applications.
Cheers !!

Ya, I've been hanging around trying to get some career info, and help on deciding on the school. I think I'll likely go to Rotman, but am still considering Schulich, and Sauder to a lesser extent.

I'm certainly not doing finance. :/ My biggest interest is strategy, but I don't really know exactly what I'd like to pursue. Consulting sounds interesting, but I'm not up for those types of hours, and so I'm considering looking into non-profit or public sector strategy (hence considering Schulich).

I dont know if Rotman is known for ops, or any canadian schools for that matter as its a less common focus, but from what I can gather they have good faculty in the area, and you should certainly get a quality education.

I am a little weary of the reputation it has of being to quantitative, and finance focused.. and perhaps a little cut-throat. What have you heard?

The two lead professors for strategy in the first term of rotman are probably among the biggest in the sector.
1>roger martin
2>anita mc ghan
I need not write about them here but you can WIKI or google and I bet u'll be impressed. Both are HBS graduates. Anita is still associated with HBS and Roger(the Dean) is a consultant to many business entities around the world.

But there is no specialization in strategic management, probably you can become a professor for the same :P. Just joking mate.

I think you should probably go for the specialization in which you have some past experiences. Anyways Rotman would be a better shot than your other schools. YOU can switch streams in the second year, say you went in with consultancy in mind but fell in love with finance.

But I have not heard many people doing that.
Cheers !!
