71. Aging is a property of all animals that reach a fixed size at maturity, and the variations in life spans among different species are far greater as that among individuals from the same species: a fruit fly is ancient at 40 days, a mouse at 3 years, a horse at 30, a man at 100, and some tortoises at 150.
(A) among different species are far greater as that among individuals from
(B) among different species are far greater than that among individuals from
(C) among different species are far greater than those among individuals of
(D) between different species are far more than that between individuals of
(E) between different species are greater by far than is that between individuals from

Answer should be C

Comparison Question.

the variations in life spans among different species are far greater than the variations in life spans among individuals from the same species.

Now the variations in life spans can be replaced with a plural pronoun i.e those.

C IMO.
1. We have to use among so d and e are out. --- Left with a, b and c.
2. Greater than should be used so a is out. --- Left with b and c.
3. greater than that is incorrect because "that" cannot replace "variations". So b is out. --- Left with C.

Is C the OA?

Hi ritesh,

u r right. OA is C.
But I am still in doubt why 'that' in B cannot replace 'variations'? Plz explain a bit more.

that is used when replacing a singular now.

In this case "the variation in life spans" needs to be replaced by a pronoun.

The variations in life spans is plural as indicated by all answer choices using "are greater". So singular pronoun that can not be used to replace.
