Profile evaluation please (Canadian!)

by gsly85 » Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:05 pm
Hello,

I'm looking to get into a Canadian MBA program. Please kindly review my profile and advise!

Personal Info: Canadian (ethnicity-Chinese)/Male/24 years old

GMAT: 670 (44Q/38V) * considering rewrite, I feel I can do 710+ *

Education: UBC Sauder / double major in Finance + Operations Management / 79% average (3.74 core GPA)/

Professional Designations: Certified Financial Planner + a few minor Canadian certificates related to the financial services industry

Work Experience: 2 years+ as a Financial Advisor at a top tier bank / initial book value was $20 million and has since grown to 27 million / very successful, top 10 in district /

Extracurricular: heavy involvement in school clubs and community when I was still in school / focus has been steered towards attaining my designations (CFP, CFA, GMAT, etc) and starting up my own business (online distributor of an all natural sweetener, website just launched 2 weeks ago!) / involved in church (but I do not know if I should mention this) //

Target: University of Toronto - Rotman
University of Western Ontario - Ivey

Purpose: change of career, very interested in non-profit sector.

Thank you for taking time to read this! Any feedback is appreciated!

Regards,
Gary

Canadian? This takes at least 10 points off your GMAT score :) Jk!

Is this 79% low for your major?

Hi Gary, you have a strong profile and I definitely think you have a shot at Rotman and Ivey. Some questions - are you planning to apply for next fall? If so, I'd get after those application soon. If not, I'd recommend taking the GMAT again and if you do increase your score, you might consider some top American schools as well.

The other area you'll want to stress that you've thought through your reasons for wanting an MBA since you only have 2 years of work experience. This doesn't seems like something that will be difficult considering what you've mentioned above about switching into non-profit. My only question might be, do you need an MBA to switch into non-profit?
